NOTRE BELLE TERRE
âOne ought to hold on to oneâs heart;
for if one lets it go,
one soon loses control of the head, too.â
Friedrich Nietzsche
Chapter 27
By the time Lauraleigh and I woke up, the sun was bright and high in the sky. Through my half-open eyes, I saw Evelyne, still sitting cross-legged by the fire. Her eyes were closed, and I thought she might be sleeping â but as soon as we stirred, she looked over at us.
âWhy didnât you wake us up?â I yawned. âIt feels like we slept half the morning away.â
âThereâs time enough. You both needed the sleep.â
âAnd I thank you for that!â Lauraleigh said with a perky smile.
âHow can you be so happy?â I asked, thinking there was something unnatural about people this chipper in the morning. Especially after having to sleep on the ground in Wendigo country. âDonât you think itâs slightly⦠aberrant?â Hearing me using that word would make Sister Constance proud â I only remembered it because it took a dozen tries to spell it properly.
Lauraleigh kept smiling. âMaybe,â she said. âExcept, I just didnât care about sleeping on the ground. All night long, I dreamt about a bed. A really soft, big and warm bed.â She chuckled.
I couldnât help but mirror her smile. I couldnât stay grumpy for long around Lauraleigh. Once again, she managed to make the best out of the situation. I wished some of that would rub off on me after spending so much time together. On my own, Iâm just not that naturally cheery.
I placed Squire and Knight on a stump of wood and started rolling up my sleeping bag. Before I finished, Evelyne handed us each a plate. âBreakfast.â
I wouldnât call reconstituted eggs and sausage breakfast, but I wasnât about to complain. I still felt hungry, even though weâd eaten so much the night before.
âYour motherâs clues led us to Chudo,â Evelyne said, sitting with her plate by the fire. âHe thought we should head north, so as soon as youâre packed, weâll go in that direction.â
It seemed to me like ânorthâ covered an awful lot of territory. âWhere exactly?â
âIt doesnât matter where,â Evelyne replied. âWeâre still in Wendigo country, and we must move outside of its realm. Right now, it matters only that we head north and place ourselves beyond the Wendigoâs reach.â Evelyne tossed her leftover food in the fire.
âWaitââ I started to say.
Evelyne stopped me with a frosty stare. âWhat?â
âNothing. Jeez, never mind.â Like Iâd tell her she shouldnât throw food away that I could still eat? I didnât think so. I figured Iâd better change the subject altogether. âHow come weââ
âChudo was tired,â she interrupted. âI had him drop us off, because I knew that otherwise, he couldnât get where he needed to go to recover. So now we must walk out of here, away from the Wendigo.â She started collecting her things in a pile. âYou need to shrink your belongings so we can leave.â
âSquire and Knight can carry things for us,â I said. âOr they can scout ahead and let us know if there is anything to be concerned about.
